Is work creeping into your leisure time, especially if you are working remote? If that is the case, how to you reclaim your summer? Those were two question Andrew Murfett, an editor at LinkedIn News asked me to comment on today.

Does work creep in to my leisure time, “YES!” There are times when I realize I’m still in my pajamas and haven’t taken my shower or eaten breakfast because I’ve been on my computer since 5 AM. I find myself forgetting to each lunch or end my day at 5 or 6 PM because I’m focused on getting something done.

It’s difficult to walk away when all you need to do is walk down the hallway and you’re in your office! However, I’d like to share some tips that have helped me this summer and will hopefully help you!

I realized years ago that where you spend your money and time, are your REAL priorities. I don’t think anyone wants to say what a great summer, I worked more hours than I even thought possible! My family has always been my top priority and I cherish the time we spend together.

My solution was to schedule breaks and leisure time on my calendar. I have very needy puppy Candy, who loves to play outside. I schedule a morning and afternoon break to play with her. I also block out my calendar to spend time with my family and friends and make sure I’m doing things that make me happy. That includes my weekly tap and jazz dance class, going to wine and canvas with my daughters, watching my grandchildren play sports and social events with my husband.

I also find it empowering to close down my computer, not check email on my phone all evening and on weekends, turn the lights off and shut the door to my office. It helps me visualize that my office is closed, the day is over and now I can enjoy my evening.

I must admit however that I’m a recovering workaholic and I have opened that door and turned my computer and lights back on – but I’m doing it less and less especially when I’ve realized the summer is almost over!

I would love to hear what you are doing to reclaim your summer and not let work creep in to your leisure time. Please share your ideas in the comments below to help the other “workaholics” reading this post.
